What NOT to Bring to Vietnam

We recently posted about the items you should bring with you when visiting Vietnam. We thought it would be fitting to also tell you about the items you should not bring with you! Here is a short list to guide you when packing for the trip and to remind you of the import rules in Vietnam.

What not to bring to Vietnam

1. The Obvious

Please do not bring illegal drugs (yes, this includes cannabis) and weapons to Vietnam. If you are caught with illegal drugs or weapons, the repercussions are not pretty!

2. Anti-Government Propaganda

Although learning about Vietnam’s history and culture before visiting is recommended, bringing reading materials containing anti-government content is not advised. Such materials will be confiscated and you will face heavy repercussions. Additionally, any printed maps must label the body of water east of Vietnam as “Eastern Sea” rather than “South China Sea.”

3. Heavy or Excess Items

Internal flights offer cheap fares but recoup costs through excess baggage fees. Avoid bringing heavy items like hair dryers or weighted luggage. Common hygiene products such as toothpaste, soap, and shampoo are readily available and inexpensive in Vietnam.

4. Expensive Items

Theft is a concern in Vietnam. Valuable jewelry, particularly necklaces and pendants, can be snatched by motorbike riders. Expensive electronics require special precautions. For cameras, use thick straps and reinforced bags like PacSafe. Phones are frequently stolen; keep them in zippered pockets and maintain awareness of your surroundings.

5. Pornography

The sale or possession of any pornographic material is strictly prohibited and illegal in Vietnam. Enforcement is very strict. Customs officers check unlabeled DVDs at airports. Pornography is illegal throughout most of Southeast Asia.
